VILLAINS
The Original Series
An early exploration of women who were publicly villainised
Villains began as a series of portraits exploring the language used to diminish women in the public eye. I painted women who had been labelled, mocked or demonised, then physically altered each portrait using the words and narratives used against them.
What began as an exploration of public women quickly became something much more personal. Women from around the world started writing to me with their own stories. They told me about the things they had endured — often horrific things — and how they had been villainised for them.
And so, I started painting their portraits. And telling their stories, from their perspective.
Villains is now a project about reclamation — while simultaneously building a powerful, political library of the language used again and again to minimise, silence and demonise women.
