I chose Bonnie Blue for the original Villains series because I knew she would challenge the premise. Bonnie has built a career around sex, provocation and increasingly extreme publicity stunts. She has deliberately courted outrage and monetised the attention it creates. More recently, her pregnancy and explicit “golden baby shower” generated another wave of controversy.

There are legitimate conversations to have about her work and choices. I don't see myself as the judge of which criticism Bonnie does or doesn't deserve. What interested me was what happens after we decide she deserves it. Slut. Whore. Disgusting. Used up. She brought it on herself.

Bonnie seems to represent a line beyond which speaking about a woman with outright hatred becomes socially acceptable — including among other women. But that language doesn't belong only to Bonnie Blue. The same words are already used against women everywhere, regardless of what they've done, how much sex they've had, or whether they've had any at all.

Some women have told me they don't want to be placed alongside Bonnie. But in the language used to diminish women, we already are.
