Amy
The effect of disbelief
At eighteen, she was sexually assaulted by her boss. Someone reported it without her knowledge, and she spent two years waiting for the court case. Giving evidence was painful. She is autistic and experiences anxiety, and her boss knew that processing difficult situations could sometimes leave her unable to speak.
He was found not guilty. Afterwards, online comments called her a liar, messages arrived, friendships were lost and she left her job. The experience damaged her confidence and left her frightened of men.
She wants people to understand that dancing was not permission to assault her. She also wants the effect of disbelief to be recognised, alongside the assault itself and the strain of the court process.
She has completed a degree in visual communication and is looking towards further study. Animals, fashion and expressing herself matter to her. She is rebuilding, while still living with fear and the consequences of what happened. She wants others to see both the hurt and the person continuing to make a future.
