Leaving the faith

After eighteen years of marriage within the Mormon faith, she began asking questions about polygamy, women's inequality and the treatment of LGBTQ people. She wanted to discuss concerns that were making her feel increasingly confined.

Her husband refused to engage with those questions. Instead, he called her evil, said she was following Satan and used a degrading insult to dismiss her. When he later had an affair with another church member, he blamed her questioning and departure from the faith, saying she had forced him into it.

She wanted support and an honest conversation, but became the person held responsible for his choices. After twenty years of marriage, she divorced and left the faith.

She is a mother, writer and teacher. Rebuilding has included learning to trust herself and creating a life she finds beautiful. She wants to model that self-trust for younger people, and to be seen as someone with her own judgement and values rather than the labels used to silence her questions.
