Sarah

Boundaries around her children

Her mother-in-law accused her of controlling her husband, including over their decision not to have more children. Everyday expectations reinforced the tension: even when her husband was present, making the tea was treated as her responsibility.

Private frustrations became gossip shared with a close friend and the wider family. Relatives insulted her and her family, using words such as “scum” and “chavs”. She was cast as a monster and a controlling woman rather than someone entitled to make decisions within her own household.

Eventually, she chose to have no contact. She wants people to understand that a family connection does not mean someone has to accept mistreatment.

She is a mother of four and a childminder. Baking, making things and spending time with her family bring her happiness. Caring for the people she loves matters to her, and so does protecting them and herself from relationships that cause harm.
