Yasmin
I was never the problem
When she was four or five, she took off some clothes because she was warm at her grandparents' home. Her mother told her to cover up because she was “turning my Grandad on”. Even as a small child, she was made responsible for an adult's response to her body.
At fifteen, she entered a relationship in which she experienced rape, domestic violence and financial abuse. It continued into her early twenties. After an injunction was breached, she fled the town to get away.
A later partner helped her leave and offered safety. Racist and homophobic insults have also been used against her, adding to the ways other people tried to diminish her.
She has struggled with her mental health, but describes building a happier life and breaking the cycle. Her partner and niece bring love and joy. Learning to drive, reading, games, singing and going to the gym are parts of growing independence.
She wants people to see someone kind, funny and lovable, rather than the words attached to her. The life she is making now belongs in her story too.
