She was forgotten.

Tarana Burke began using the phrase “Me Too” in 2006 as part of her work supporting survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black girls and women.

More than a decade later, #MeToo exploded into a global movement — but Burke's name and the years of survivor-led work behind it were far less widely recognised.

This portrait is about erasure: who gets remembered when an idea becomes a movement, whose voice gets amplified, and whose contribution disappears from the story.

This work is part of the Original Villains series, the collection from which the participatory Villains project grew.
