When Naomi Osaka withdrew from press commitments at the 2021 French Open to protect her mental health, her decision became an international controversy.

She was criticised as difficult, selfish and ungrateful — her boundary reframed as a failure to fulfil what the public believed she owed them.

The portrait also references the ways Osaka's identity has been altered and scrutinised in the public eye, including imagery in which her skin was depicted significantly lighter.

This work is part of the Original Villains series, the collection from which the participatory Villains project grew.
