She was crazy.

For years, Britney Spears' distress was consumed as entertainment.

Her mental health, relationships, motherhood and appearance became public property. She was mocked, photographed and reduced to “crazy” while simultaneously living under a conservatorship that controlled huge parts of her life.

This portrait looks back at that cultural moment and the ease with which a woman visibly struggling became the spectacle rather than someone deserving compassion.

This work is part of the Original Villains series, the collection from which the participatory Villains project grew.
